Come all you good people, I pray pay attention
And listen to those few lines I'm going to sing,
Concerning a fair one who slighted her fond lover
And married another more richer and more gay.

Now then how can you lie on another man's pillow,
When once you and I were true lovers so long,
And leave me alone to wear the green willow
And then for ever after this wide world to roam.

Now then supper was ordered and all things got ready
And the question was given O for who'd sing a song,
And the lot it did fall on her own former loved one,
The song that he sang to herself it did belong.

Now she listened to the song with the greatest of pleasure,
Verse after verse she remembered it quite well,
And to bear with those verses she could no longer listen,
It was down at the feet of the bridegroom she fell.

Now, she says, my dearest true love, one wish I'm going to ask you,
Hoping that you won't deny it on me.
And that is the first night to lie with my mamma
And then for ever after to lie along with thee.

Now the question that she asked him was already granted,
Sobbing and sighing she went to her bed.
Her husband rose O so early the next morning,
Went to her bedside and found she was dead.

There is a tree in my father's young garden,
Some people call it the early true bloom,
But when it bears its fruit on a cold summery morning,
It's then all false lovers will prove loyal and true.
